*The map should show now the entire trip so far, but doesn't seem to save much location information as we thought while out of Telstra reception. As a result there are gaps missing from our route, but hopefully you'll get most of the key points.
Also, not many photos until I can get a better internet connection*
Get up pack up, have breakfast, leave. Not necessarily in that order.
This morning I finished off the muesli I had made before the trip, so it looks like weetbix will be breakfast for me any time we camp out, which is not a bad thing.
We were on the road before 7 this morning, passing some picturesque landscape in the morning sun, and having to slow down for some cows that weren't sure what to make of us, and also slow down for a group of those mini eagles we've been seeing that were feeding on road kill. There was even a big wedge-tailed eagle among them. Very majestic birds.
We turned off the highway to head to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater on unsealed roads. Some hard dirt, most sandy, and all corrugated. We had to contend with cows on the way there, we came to a spot which must be where the water was. There were at least a hundred cows around and most of them watched us pass, but some decided they wanted to play chicken. Why did the cow cross the road? Who bloody knows...
Wolfe Creek Crater itself was pretty impressive to look at. With nothing but flats all around for miles, it was worth the drive out I thought.
After that we ducked down towards Bililuna to check out the Canning Stock Route and see if the first stretch was as bad as legend had it. It wasn't so bad, but I'm sure it gets worse further in. That mission accomplished, we turned about to go to Halls Creek and found a tree for a little shade to have lunch.
A group of about 10 trail bikes (each with a rider on top) passed us on the dirt roads, and when we stopped to refuel at Halls Creek they stopped too and we had a chat. They had been going up the Canning Stock Route for the last week and hadn't had a shower in seven days. What a life!
We got a few supplies for dinner tonight then pushed on out of Halls Creek on the rough, windy, hilly dirt roads towards Top Springs. We drove until Gerald had 5 minutes of driving time left, then scouted around for a spot to set up camp. Frog found a spot near the river or Creek we had happened to stop beside.
Turns out we're at Palm Springs campsite.
After dark we broke out the portable DVD player for the second time, this time to watch Stone, an Australian film from the '70s.
